Practice Catch and Release for Walleyes!

Writer's picture: Bill AbbaBill Abba

FOFL has been working hard to re-establish a healthy, sustainable population of walleyes in Finger Lake. Stocking of fish, keeping spawning beds clear and available, and improving habitat especially for juvenile fish are some of the key projects. We ask all residents and their guests to practice catch and release with walleyes, at least for another year or so. This is critical for establishing a strong class of spawning fish. We also want to remind everyone that the DNR changed limits for walleyes a few years back to help maintain healthy populations of this important sport fish. The current limit is: 3 fish per day, no fish may be kept under 15 inches, no fish may be kept between 20 and 24 inches, and only 1 of the 3 daily limit may be longer than 24 inches. The possession limit is 6 fish in total.
